Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. announced on October 23, 2013, that the smart watch Galaxy Gear will be compatible with Galaxy S4, S3, and Note 2 through the Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) update. Compatibility to other Samsung devices will follow. Up to now, Galaxy Gear is sole available for use with Galaxy Note 3. In my point of view, this is the biggest disadvantage of Galaxy Gear at the moment.
The update came first to Galaxy S4 devices in Germany in October. Samsung will also extend Galaxy Gear compatibility to other GALAXY devices – including Galaxy S4 mini, S4 Active, Mega 5.8, Mega 6.3 and S4 zoom – through a separate software update beginning at the end of October. Software update schedules for each device will vary by country and carrier.
Now the Galaxy Gear is getting more and more attractive to me. The size of the Galaxy Note 3 is too large for using the Note 3 as a Smartphone substitute. I would prefer the Galaxy S4 in conjunction with the Galaxy Gear. However, the more features the Galaxy Gear will get, the more it is like a Smartphone. Hence, I would not need a smartphone anymore in the near future. Meaning I would be using the Galaxy Gear together with a Samsung tablet, like the Galaxy Note 10.1. As a result, Samsung should give the Galaxy Gear a compatibility to Samsung tablets, too!
Taking everything into account, it is a big step ahead for Samsung to give Galaxy Gear compatibility to more Samsung devices. The first step is done, next step must follow: Compatibility to Samsung tablets!
Stay tuned! 😉
