Setting up a GSM Gateway on a FRITZ!Box with a mobile broadband modem USB stick can be easily done because this is a standard feature of the latest FRITZ!Box models, beginning with the 72XX series and higher. I took as combination a FRITZ!Box 7390 and a Huawei / Vodafone K3765 mobile broadband USB modem stick.
Displaying the incoming caller ID (CLIP = Calling Line Identification Presentation) of a GSM gateway (Vodafone RL 500 ZTE) connected to a FRITZ!Box 7170 V2 works by connecting the GSM gateway and the FRITZ!Box 7170 V2 via an own crimped cable. One end of the crimped cable has a 4C2P plug (pins 2 +3), the other end a 8C2P plug (RJ45, pins 3 + 6). If you set up of the GSM Gateway with a Sagem / Vodafone RL 500 on a FRITZ!Box 7170 V2 with the enclosed products’ cables and connectors, the caller ID will not be displayed on your phones for calls coming via the GSM gateway to the FRITZ!Box.
Update: The Best File Manager And FTP Apps for iPhone And iPad (Review)
In July 2012 I reviewed 9 FTP clients for iPhone and iPad. The best FTP – NAS ‘Private iCloud’ app was definitely the File Explorer app, followed by iStorage HD (iPad) / iStorage (iPhone). The later ones got too many crashes. But the successors, iStorage 2 HD (iPad) and iStorage (iPhone), perform better now.
I‘ve been using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) with my iPhone and iPad in conjunction with my FRITZ!Box 6360 for a long while. The VPN via a free dyndns.org account (offer of free accounts in the mean time discontinued!) worked perfectly together with my iPhone 4S and my iPad 4 till a couples of day ago.
Setting up a GSM gateway is really simple: What you need is a router with an integrated modem, e.g. a FRITZ!Box 7170, a (secondary) SIM card of a mobile network provider of your choice and a GSM fixed wireless terminal, e.g. a Sagem / Vodafone RL 500 (products can be found in miShopping) . That’s all! OK, you need some cables, too. But that’s indeed everything you need.
A few days ago I received the following email from FastVoip, a VOIP provider I use (VOIP and Fritzbox 7170 combined with Fritzbox 6360 cable):
“Dear Valued FastVoip user/reseller,
FastVoip is writing to let you know that we will no longer be providing service starting October 1st, 2012. From September 1st 2012, you will no longer be able to add credit to your account.
Update: iStorage 2 HD 2.4: Universal File Manager and FTP App for iPhone and iPad
In contrast to that I wrote some days ago, FTP on the Go isn’t still the best app for managing my private iCloud / cloud to me. Yesterday I found something better: iStorage! There are two apps, one for the iPad (iStorage HD, version 2.0) and one for the iPhone (iStorage for Cloud, version 1.5.13, version 2.0 coming in August this year). What impressed me was that I’m now able to manage my NAS together with Dropbox, box (not yet iStorage for iPhone) and WebDav-Access in one single app.
On the beginning of March I changed my phone and internet provider because of performance reasons: Via cable I got a faster down and up load. Now I got a Fritzbox 6360 cable. Everything works well, but my cable internet provider disabled the Fritzbox function to make VOIP.
