Documents By Readdle FTPHere’s my review about the best file manager and FTP apps for iPhone and iPad. iPhone and iPad file manager and FTP apps are essentials tools to manage your private Cloud / private iCloud in your home network. Even more, home network access via VPN is getting more important. Since my last review on the best file manager and FTP apps for iPhone and iPad, dated April 14, 2013, a lot happened: File Explorer was updated to version 4 and a new file manager, called Cloud Commander, was published. Last, but not least, Documents 5 by Readdle‘s release on February 27, 2014, is a big step forward to make the file manager app to a kind of ‘control center’, called ‘Add-Ons’, for certain other Readdle apps. Up to now, this ‘control center’ is only available on iPad.

iStorage iconiStorage 2 HD 2.4 is a universal file manager and FTP app for iPhone and iPad. Since my first review about iStorage 2 HD on June 24, 2012, iStorage 2 HD was much improved and got a universal app. The last update 2.4.1 was released 8 months ago on September 3, 2013. Therefore, I was interested if iStorage 2 HD still fits my requirements on iOS 7.

FileExplorer 4.0 is a useful file manager for iPhone and iPad for organising cloud services, NAS drives and for remotely accessing your Mac or Windows PC. FileExplorer has been my favourite file manager until Cloud Commander for iOS was released.

Update: Documents 5 By Readdle: Redesigned File Manager for iPhone and iPad
Documents 5 iconOn October, 25, 2013, Documents by Readdle got an update to version 4.4. It is a small update, but with a major improvement: Now Documents by Readdle 4.4 supports windows shared folder support (SMB). This means that Macs (Time Capsule, MacBook Pro, iMac, MacBook Air) are supported via SMB, too! In my point of view, this is a big step ahead for managing my private cloud / iCloud. Now AirDrop is supported, too.

Update: PhotoSync 2.0 review

PhotoSync App LogoPhotoSync has been one of my very first file transferring and syncing apps. I’ve already reported about PhotoSync eleven months before (with special focus on the settings!). But how is PhotoSync 1.7.2 app doing right now? Almost perfectly: The PhotoSync Companions are running stably both on Windows 8 (version 1.6.4 released on November 22, 2012) and OS X 10.8.3 Mountain Lion (version 1.6.1 released on September 4, 2012). Further more, the universal iOS app for iPhone and iPad does what it should do (version 1.7.2. released on December 28, 2012). Last but not least, you got a big number of cloud services you can access via PhotoSync app. 🙂 But I could not connect PhotoSync to a Time Capsule. 🙁

Update: The Best File Manager And FTP Apps for iPhone And iPad (Review)
Documents By Readdle FTPIn July 2012 I reviewed 9 FTP clients for iPhone and iPad. The best FTP – NAS ‘Private iCloud’ app was definitely the File Explorer app, followed by iStorage HD (iPad) / iStorage (iPhone). The later ones got too many crashes. But the successors, iStorage 2 HD (iPad) and iStorage (iPhone), perform better now.

Update: iStorage 2 HD 2.4: Universal File Manager and FTP App for iPhone and iPad
iStorage iconIn contrast to that I wrote some days ago, FTP on the Go isn’t still the best app for managing my private iCloud / cloud to me. Yesterday I found something better: iStorage! There are two apps, one for the iPad (iStorage HD, version 2.0) and one for the iPhone (iStorage for Cloud, version 1.5.13, version 2.0 coming in August this year). What impressed me was that I’m now able to manage my NAS together with Dropbox, box (not yet iStorage for iPhone) and WebDav-Access in one single app.
