Plex LogoPlex is a media center software including a media server, and desktop (Mac OS X, Windows 7, 8 and 8.1) and mobile clients (iOS, Android, Windows Phone 8) and now is now also available on Chromecast. Plex organizes all of your personal media, wherever you keep it, so you can enjoy it on any devices. Plex is also running on Apple TV (2nd and 3rd) generation. However, you need to tweak the Apple TV with PlexConnect on Mac OS X or Windows 7, 8 and 8.1. This is not a simply doing, you need to install several apps, create and install a specific Apple TV profile. Especially, inexperencied user face problems to get PlexConnect running. Hence, there is an easier way to use Plex on Apple TV without PlexConnect or jailbreak via AirPlay mirroring using Plex for iOS.

Plex LogoOn March 10, 2014, Apple released the Apple TV 6.1 (6698.99.16) software update. PlexConnect is still running on Apple TV 6.1 (2nd and 3rd generation). I tested it right now and I can confirm it for my Acer Aspire 1810T running on Windows 8.1 Pro and my MacBook Pro 13” (Mid 2012) running on Mavericks. There was no need to change anything in the set up of  PlexConnect. Apple TV 6.1 delivers some security improvements and a new feature to arrange main menu items, especially unwanted channels.

Plex LogoOn February 21, 2014, Apple released the second Apple TV 6.0.2 (6646.81.1) software update. The first Apple TV 6.0.2 Update (6646.81.1) was released on November 23, 2013. It is very interesting that Apple did neither change the software version to 6.0.3 nor the detailed version from 6646.81.1 to 6646.82.1. PlexConnect is still running on Apple TV 6.0.2 (2nd and 3rd generation). I tested it right now and I can confirm it for my Acer Aspire 1810T running on Windows 8.1 Pro and my MacBook Pro 13” (Mid 2012) running on Mavericks. There was no need to change anything in the set up of  PlexConnect.

Plex LogoHere’s how to install a certificate on Apple TV without USB cable (micro USB cable) to get PlexConnect on your Apple TV. Installing a certificate on your Apple TV is essential to get PlexConnect running because of the silent Apple TV Software update from August 27, 2013. Up to now, it was necessary to connect your Apple TV to your computer (Mac and Windows PC) via a micro USB cable. Some people including me noticed that not every micro USB cable is working to get the Apple TV recognized in the iPhone configuration utility.

Plex LogoLast week Apple released 2 updates: Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks and the small update for Apple TV 6.0.1. PlexConnect is still running on Apple TV 6.0.1 (2nd and 3rd generation) as reported in the plex forum. The same is reported there for Mac OX X 10.9 Mavericks. I checked it on my own and I can confirm it for my Acer Aspire 1810T running on Windows 8.1 Pro and my MacBook Pro 13” (Mid 2012) running on Mavericks. However, I had to re-install both the Windows and the Mac OS X certificate on my Apple TV 3.

Update: AirPlay Mirroring: AirParrot 1.2 For Windows Still Stutters On Videos
AirParrot logo bigOn September 26, 2013, AirSquirrels released AirParrot 1.1.7 for Windows. As reported previously for AirParrot 1.1.3, AirParrot 1.1.7 is still defective on my Acer Aspire 1810T running on Windows 8.1 Preview, too. AirPlay mirroring my PC’s screen to my Apple TV 3 still stutters every time I try to AirPlay videos to my Apple TV. Up to now, I did not face any sound problems to fix.

Plex LogoI’ve already reported about that PlexConnect still works on Apple TV Software 6.0 Beta (5.4 Seed 3, iOS 7) after the silent update from August, 27, 2013 and how to fix PlexConnect to get it running again on Apple TV 2 or Apple TV 3. However, getting PlexConnect installed on a Windows system like windows 7, 8 or 8.1 is a little bit tricky. Although Paul Kehrer published immediately a tweak to get PlexConnect working again on Apple TV 2 and 3, a lot of people are reporting about installation is failing, especially on Windows systems. The most common problem there is to get the certificate or profile correctly installed on the Apple TV. In the following I give you a simple step-by-step guide to get PlexConnect running again on Windows 7, 8 and 8.1. For installing PlexConnect on Mac OS X follow the fix described on the post ‘PlexConnect still works on Apple TV Software 6.0 Beta (5.4 Seed 3, iOS 7) after the silent update‘.

Update for windows 7,8 and 8.1: Installing PlexConnect On Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 After Apple TV Update
Plex LogoOn August, 27, 2013, Apple released a ‘silent’ update on Apple TV. Apps for Vevo, Weather Channel, Disney, and Smithsonian Channel were added. Together with these new apps, the update broke the option to run Plex Media Server via PlexConnect on Apple TV 2 and 3 (Apple TV 1 was never supported by PlexConnect). However, Paul Kehrer published immediately a tweak to get PlexConnect working again on Apple TV 2 and 3. I followed Paul’s tweak and I got PlexConnect working again both on an Apple TV 3 running on Apple TV software 5.3 and an Apple TV 3 running on Apple TV Software 6.0 Beta (5.4 seed 3, iOS 7) after the latest Apple TV update.

Update: PlexConnect Still Works On Apple TV Software 6.0 Beta (5.4 Seed 3, iOS 7) After Update
Plex LogoI’ve already posted about the major update to Apple TV Software 6.0 beta. Beside the new features, I was keen on knowing if PlexConnect will still run on Apple TV software 6.0 beta. PlexConnect, a brilliant solution to get Plex running on an Apple TV 2 or 3 without jailbreaking the device, works on Version 5.3 and 5.4 beta.  I tested both the Mac OS X and the Windows version for another time on my Acer Aspire 1810T running on Windows 8 Pro and my MacBook Pro running on OS X 10.8.4 with my Apple TV 3: PlexConnect still works perfectly on Apple TV software 6.0 beta (5.4 beta seed 3).
