GoodReader 4, the next generation of the well-known PDF reader and iOS file manager app, was released on May 7, 2014. GoodReader 4 is a complete new and now universal app for iPhone and iPad. This means you need to purchase GoodReader 4 as a new app, even if you have already bought GoodReader for iPhone and or GoodReader for iPad. But don’t worry, there is a migration assistant to move your files and settings from the old version to the new GoodReader 4. It works like charm within seconds or minutes depending on the total size of your files. Further more, GoodReader 4 adds a new feature – PDF Page Management.
Here’s my review about the best file manager and FTP apps for iPhone and iPad. iPhone and iPad file manager and FTP apps are essentials tools to manage your private Cloud / private iCloud in your home network. Even more, home network access via VPN is getting more important. Since my last review on the best file manager and FTP apps for iPhone and iPad, dated April 14, 2013, a lot happened: File Explorer was updated to version 4 and a new file manager, called Cloud Commander, was published. Last, but not least, Documents 5 by Readdle‘s release on February 27, 2014, is a big step forward to make the file manager app to a kind of ‘control center’, called ‘Add-Ons’, for certain other Readdle apps. Up to now, this ‘control center’ is only available on iPad.
iStorage 2 HD 2.4 is a universal file manager and FTP app for iPhone and iPad. Since my first review about iStorage 2 HD on June 24, 2012, iStorage 2 HD was much improved and got a universal app. The last update 2.4.1 was released 8 months ago on September 3, 2013. Therefore, I was interested if iStorage 2 HD still fits my requirements on iOS 7.
Update: Review GoodReader 4: New Universal App, Price And PDF Page Management
GoodReader for iPhone and iPad (not universal) are not only excellent PDF reader and annotating apps. GoodReader is a hidden champion of file manager and FTP apps for iPhone and iPad to manage files of your computers (Mac and Windows PC), private cloud / iCloud, many cloud services, NAS drives (Time Capsule) and FTP servers. The latest Goodreader 3.20.0 update fully supports iOS 7.
FileBrowser for iOS is universal file manager and viewer app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. FileBrowser can view, copy, move, upload, download, stream and manage files between computers, servers, NAS drives and cloud storage in any direction.
The FileBrowser update to version 5.1 adds Google Drive support, a new dark user interface theme, streaming video to VLC app and many things more (see release notes).
FileExplorer, one of my favorite file managing and FTP app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, became a minor update to from version 3.0.0 to 3.1.0 on November 13, 2013, and mainly fixes the incompatibility to Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks. Further improvements are now an official Windows 8.1 and a Western Digital NAS support. Details about FileExplorer can be found on my latest review on FileExplorer.
As you may know, I really like PhotoSync App, especially, because of the high-speed photo file transfer and the excellent and free Windows PC (running on Windows 8) and Mac (running on OS X 10.8.3 Mountain Lion) companions. Today PhotoSync 2.0 for iPhone and iPad (universal app) was released. I intensively tested the new version: It’s a big step ahead!
