Fixing iTunes 11 Crashes On Windows 8 And Windows 8.1

Update: Fixing iTunes 11.1.4 Windows Installations: Apple Support Document released
Update: Fixing iTunes 11.1.4 Installation Crashes On Windows Vista, XP, 7, 8 And 8.1
Update: iTunes 11.1 And iTunes Radio Running On Windows 8 And Windows 8.1

iTunes 11 iconGetting iTunes 11 running on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 seems to be simple for some people (like me), but others report about iTunes 11 crashes on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 after starting even if they got iTunes installed on Windows 8 or Windows 8.1: After opening iTunes it crashes after a few seconds, iTunes freezes or crashes when starting iTunes Store. I collected 4 workarounds to get iTunes crashing or freezing fixed.

Note: If you could not install iTunes, try to install iTunes correctly, first.

Update: Fixing iTunes 11.1.4 Installation Crashes On Windows Vista, XP, 7, 8 And 8.1

    Fix 1:

Install the latest Flash player, test if iTunes is running now. If not, install the latest Java. If iTunes is still not running, try the next fix:

    Fix 2:

The most successful fix is to copy the file ‘QTMovieWin.dll‘ from

    • c:\program files (x86)\common files\apple\apple application support\ to
    • c:\program files (x86)\iTunes.

Now iTunes should work correctly without any crashes. If iTunes is still not working, try to ‘cut & paste’ the file instead of copying it (Kudos to miApple.me’s commentator ‘Rex’).

    Fix 3:

In many cases it seems that there is a problem with the Intel HD graphics 4000 driver. Download and install either the latest Intel HD graphics 4000 driver for your computer from the Intel support homepage, or, in most cases even better, from the computer manufacturer’s support page. If iTunes crashes still persist, you should try the other way round and downgrade the graphics driver to an older version of the Intel HD 4000 graphics driver. If you are not very experienced in up- and downgrading drivers, try Fix 4 first!

    Fix 4:

l9ChevyDriven85 reported that there is a solution without downgrading the Intel HD 4000 graphics driver (maybe it will work for other drivers, too):

    1. Click on the Windows Button, go to the ‘Control Panel‘ and open ‘System‘.
    2. Click on ‘Advanced system settings‘ and the ‘System Properties‘ window opens.
    3. Click on the ‘Advanced‘ tab and hit the ‘Environment Variables’ button.
    4. Find and highlight the ‘Path‘ variable in the ‘Systems Variables‘ section and click on ‘Edit‘.  The ‘Edit System Variable‘ window opens.
    5. Finally, place your mouse cursor at the very end of the ‘Variable Value‘ and paste exactly the following value to the end: ‘;C:\program files (x86)\common files\apple\apple application support\. The semicolon ‘;‘ is essential!

If you, at least, followed one of the above mentioned fixes, iTunes 11 crashing and freezing should be resolved. If you succeeded, let us know and comment! If not, describe me your problem in the comment section and I will try my very best to help you to fix it!

    Stay tuned! 😉

Hey mate, I’ve tried all of the above steps, except for number 3. Which is updating Intel HD Graphics 4000, it seems I don’t have this as my system is a bit old compared to others. I have an Intel E8400 3.0ghz core 2 duo and an Nvidia GeForce 8800GT 512mb. The 3 fixes I can apply, have not worked and have double checked all info to make sure I didn’t miss any instructions. If it helps you any further here’s a summary of my PC and whats wrong:

      CPU – Intel 3.0Ghz Core 2 Duo
      GPU – Nvidia GEForce 8800GT 512mb
      OS – Windows 8.1
Problem – iTunes freezes on start-up at “Determining gapless playback information” as it is analyzing the first song. (Did the same with older version of iTunes)

Note: This is a fresh install of Windows 8.1, iTunes is yet to run correctly. Windows 7 it worked fine.

        Hi Peter,

it seems that your problem lies deeper. Therefore, you need to un-install iTunes and all connected programs and services completely and then do a clean install of iTunes 12. Here’s the ‘how-to’:

        Hi Nilesh,

did this kind of sync work before you got your iPhone 6? Has it already worked on iOS 8? More information would be helpful…

        Cheers,

Nothing is working for me… Any ideas??
Another question… I followed the instructions for changing the path on another website, and instead of ADDING to the path I REPLACED it with C:\program files (x86)\common files\apple\apple application support. Is this a problem?

        Hi taytomes,

the fixes I post work only if you follow them EXACTLY! Hence, try fix 2 as it is described.

If this doesn’t work follow these instructions:

None of the above worked for me. I’m running Windows 8.1. I’m not a pro in computer but a home user. I even tried reinstalling iTunes several times but no success.

        Hi Wellington,

did you de-install iTunes properly? Have a look at the following post to see how to proceed correctly:
        https://miapple.me/fix-itunes-11-1-4-windows-installations-apple-support-document-released/
Check this work-around! And then install the latest iTunes 11 version ‘as administrator’.

        Cheers,
